{mosimage}2007 NCAA Big 12 Preview – Oklahoma Sooners – (11-3 2006 record)
Bob Stoops in my opinion has become the best Big 12 coach since the retirement of Dr. Tom Osborne, which is high praise coming from a Nebraskan. The Oklahoma Sooners (11- 3 overall, 7- 1 Big 12) finished first in the Big 12 and then beat the Nebraska Cornhuskers 21- 7 to secure the conference crown. They met Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl and in the game of the Century so far, lost in OT 42- 43. The Sooners are almost always good for 10 wins each season, simply by showing up. Their consistency makes them almost a shoe-in for a bowl bid.

Oklahoma scored an average of 30.3 PPG, ranking them 19th in the nation. Senior RB Allen Patrick (169 CAR, 761 YDs, 4.5 AVG, 4 TDs) and sophomore RB Chris Brown (70 CAR, 343 YDs, 4.9 AVG, 6 TDs) have some extremely large shoes to fill in replacing top back Adrian Peterson, who left early for the NFL. Junior WR Malcom Kelly (62 REC, 993 YDs, 16.0 AVG, 10 TDs) is the team’s best big-play guy and rock solid. The offensive line is the toughest and best in the entire conference. All of this helps with the fact that the team will have a new quarterback who is unknown and relatively inexperienced. It could be junior Joey Halzel or freshman Sam Bradford. The Sooners defense limited opponents to 17.3 PPG, also ranking them 19th. Their defense attacks and then attacks again. The frontline is inexperienced and the biggest question mark. The secondary is exemplary, led by FS Nic Harris (68 tackles, 40 solo, 4 INTs). The LBs are always the toughest on this team. Junior Curtis Lofton at WLB is the returning starter on the squad. However to compete for a Big12 title and then a national championship this has to improve 17 points will be too much to win in January.
Once again Stoops make or break game will be Texas at the Cotton Bowl in October, the winner of that game has the inside track on the national championship, unless in state rival Oklahoma State throws a stick in the spokes once again. The UT game and the early September game against Miami just might determine an undefeated season. I see them going 11-1 and 7-1 in conference.
