ANALYSIS OF THE COLTS
2007 DRAFT

Don’t you just love it
when the rich get richer. Last year’s defending champs have used the 2007
draft to add depth to their 2006 Championship team. Starting with first rounder
Anthony Gonzalez, here is how the Colts fared in this year’s draft.

1st Round (32) Anthony Gonzalez (WR)

As if Peyton Manning did not have enough
weapons at his disposal, the Colt’s offense picked up the speedy Anthony
Gonzalez from Ohio
State. Gonzalez is a
blazer who can run a 4.38 40, and is extremely quick coming off the line.
This gifted receiver has excellent vision, great hands and is a gym rat
that will work hard on his skills. Anthony will enter the season as the
Colt’s third receiver, and with the attention that both Harrison and Wayne generate,
look for this rookie to have an excellent season. Though he disappeared in last
year’s Championship game against Florida,
Gonzalez had 100 yard days against both Texas
and Michigan State. Most scouts have him penciled in
as a future slot receiver, where his agility will get him big yardage after the
catch.

2nd Round (42) Tony Ugoh (T)

A massive 6-6, 300 pound Tackle out of Arkansas, Tony Ugoh held
his own against some of the fiercest pass rushers in the nation last season.
Quick footed and with an impressive wingspan, the athletic Ugoh will force pass
rushers to take a wide swing around him. Scouts would like to see the mammoth
Tackle finish his drives a bit more. Still, he is a welcome addition to the
Colt line.

3rd Round (95) Daymeion Hughes (CB)

Unimpressive times in the 40 (4.6, 4.7) in the
combines dropped Hughes stock in the draft, though it is rumored that a
hamstring injury was the reason for the slow times. However, Daymeion shows
good instincts and a nose for the football having led the Pac-10 in
interceptions his Senior year. Though not the shutdown corner that teams covet,
Hughes should still fit into the Colts secondary, especially during zone
coverage.

3rd Round (98) Quinn Pitcock (DT)

Quinn is the prototypical big body that makes
for a great runner stopper at the Defensive Tackle position. Limited in skills,
this 300 pound former Buckeye still exhibits natural leadership skills and a
constant motor that will make him a valuable addition to the Colts.

4th Round (131) Brannon
Condren (S)

A safety with the ability to make plays all
over the field. Brannon had a huge game against Rice in the New Orleans
Bowl where he tallied an interception, a sack and seven tackles. Scouts believe
that Condren has limitations against the pass, but excels against the run.
Brannon shows great discipline, reads the play well and has a good closing
burst of speed.

4th (136) Clint
Session (LB)

Considered one of the fastest
linebackers in the draft, the 6-0, 235 Session will most likely see action
playing in the Cover 2 for the Colts. Scouts had the smallish Session as a 7th
rounder, but Colts
president Bill Polian had strong convictions about taking the LB from Pitt.

5th (169) Roy Hall (WR)

Another WR from Ohio State,
Roy Hall is not as sterling a prospect as Gonzalez. However, Hall had some
strong workouts (running a 4.35 40), and he has the size (6-2, 230) to stick
with the team. With his size and speed, Hall compares favorably to former
Buckeyes David Boston, which makes him a great rookie to keep an eye on this
season.

5th (173) Michael Coe (CB)

There are Scouts that find Coe to be one
dimensional, but that’s okay when that one dimension is defending the pass.
This Alabama State product has the potential to be a
shut down corner. Coe lead his conference in pass defended with 16 last season.

7th Rnd: Kenyunta Dawson

Defensive Tackles do not usually come in 250
pound packages as does Kenyunta Dawson. Perhaps this lack of bulk is the reason
that this exciting player fell to the 7th round of the draft. Lucky for the
Colts, as the rookie has been impressing teammates in camp.

Free Agent: Ed Johnson

Johnson was projected to go in the draft. The fact that he
slipped right passed all teams is what landed him on the Colts. This Penn State
grad that nobody wanted has found himself a starting spot on the team this
year.

Free Agent: Trent Shelton

On a team of impressive receivers, Shelton came up big against the Bears,
leading the team in receptions that game. Able to double up and perform well on
special teams, this is a kid to keep your eyes on.
