Description

{mosimage}The University of Georgia is known for its dazzling production of great NFL running backs. Among the Georgia alumni that have made a name for themselves in the NFL are Herschel Walker, Rodney Hampton and Terrell Davis, though Walker (1982) and Frank Sinkwich (1942) have been the only Bulldog runners to take home the coveted Heisman Trophy. Could sensational tailback Knowshon Moreno be the next Heisman Trophy candidate to come out of this football program?

Moreno a 5-11, 205 lbs, running back out of Belford New Jersey is
getting off to a great start for the Bulldogs this year. Last week
Knowshon was named SEC Freshman player of the week after helping the
Bulldogs to a 26-23 victory against the University of Alabama. In a
thrilling overtime victory, Moreno ran for 74 yards on 17 carries and
scored once for Georgia. For the season, this powerful young back, with
4.5 speed in the 40, has quietly gained 342 yards rushing, averaging a
little over 5 yards a carry. The versatile back has added 120 yards
receiving, and had first 100 yard day of his career in the second game
of the season against South Carolina.

Although he is already ranked in the top 10 of SEC rushers this
season, Georgia coaches still see room for improvement in the talented
Freshman. Yet despite the coaches consevative view, Moreno’s massive
potential, coupled with the ability to break open a game with a big
play from scrimmage, are the main reasons that the young back has been
able to take some playing time away from Senior backs Kregg Lumpkin and
Thomas Brown this season.

Before his tenure at the University of Georgia began, Moreno had
been a nationally ranked running back recruit out of Middletown South
High School in New Jersey. In an amazing prep career, Moreno piled up
over 6,200 yards rushing and 128 touchdowns. The two totals rank 2nd
and 1st on the state’s all-time list. Blessed with explosiveness,
intelligence and a highly competitive nature, Knowshon went on to be
recruited by such powerhouse programs as the University of Michigan and
Florida, before he settled on Georgia. Aside from his fore mentioned
attributes, Moreno is a high energy individual with a love for the game
who is sure to remain a coach’s favorite for a long time to come.
Pencil this kid in as a future first or second round draft pick in the
2011 NFL Draft and a potential Heisman candidate while he remains in
college.
