I told you so.

Ok, the words "Rutgers will beat USF" never spewed from my mouth but in the college football world predictions seem futile. In my last column about USF and the Grothe IT factor, my two cautionary tales about the USF Bulls came to light: a bad offensive line and overrated run defense.

Matt Grothe was sacked seven times and the run defense that had not given up 100 yards all season gave up 188 yards to phenom Ray Rice, as Rutgers pulled off the upset. Yet another upset that really wasn’t, as Rutgers beat South Florida last year, too.  Yes, just like Auburn beat Florida last year and USF beat West Virginia a year ago; these aren’t upsets they are re-runs!

And just like last year, nobody could stop Ray Rice.  The Rutgers defense stopped USF twice late and the game was over. The sad truth is, I missed the final 6 minutes passed out on the couch. Forgive me, this "upset" thing is, to quote Teddy Ginn Jr., is "no big, biggie."

But let’s move to the story beyond the story, which is usually where we end up when watching the ESPN pre-game telecast. I thought Mark May and Robert Smith were going to get in a fight. Marky May and his funky hunch was claiming USF should be el numero uno based on their strrength of schedule, while Robert Smith was using a "common sense" approach, saying Ohio State was the better team despite who they may have, or have not beaten.

He trapped Mark May (he is up for our Mouse Trap award!) when asking if USC was undefeated, would he rank USF ahead of them based on this "quality win theory" that Mark May utilizes when convenient to his natural, obvious biases. May said yes, he would still put USF at #1, which was a pudgy faced lie.

Of course, the entire argument was stupid because if you are in the top two you make it to the title game. So, 1 is just as good as 2. I guess you don’t want to let that little fact get in the way of quality air time. 

But back to the game, the Big East race is officially wide open and yes, so is the BCS title race.  Hold on to your seats, as Ohio State’s run defense, which is very untested, faces a great running game for Michigan lead by Ohio native Javon Ringer. Do I think MSU will win, hell no!  But it is going to be yet another crazy weekend in college football.

Side Note

How did you guys like that "Bull Frenzy" thing that ESPN kept doing?  They kept showing some arena in Tampa where USF fans gathered to watch the game. Despite how they tried to make it look, USF still can’t sell out and this Bull frenzy thing seemed to occupy only a small part of the seating capacity. Funny stuff.
