The decision by the McDonald’s fast food chain to put calorie counts on its menus has captured the attention of the national media, with many pundits wondering whether or not the move will trigger a series of similar decisions by other food chains across the country.

The addition of calorie counts is certainly a positive step on the surface, but ultimately the change is little to do much, if anything, to help combat the poor health epidemic gripping the fast food-loving United States.

McDonald’s is already touting the supposed virtues of its 300-calorie (give or take a few) Egg McMuffin breakfast sandwich, but there are over 50 reasons why this approach is fatally flawed in the long run.

Calorie counts mean nothing: The McMuffin Deception

Those 50+ reasons are as follows, courtesy of a post from last year’s Snack Girl blog detailing the mind-numbingly long list of ingredients in an Egg McMuffin.

The ingredients:

English Muffin:
Enriched flour (bleached wheat flour, malted barley flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamin mononitrate, riboflavin, folic acid), water, yeast, high fructose corn syrup, sugar, wheat gluten, soybean oil and/or canola oil, contains 2% or less of the following: salt, calcium sulfate, calcium carbonate, citric acid, calcium citrate, yellow corn flour, corn meal, rice flour, barley malt, artificial flavors, natural flavors (botanical source), dough conditioners (ascorbic acid, azodicarbonamide, datem, tricalcium phosphate, monocalcium phosphate, enzymes, calcium peroxide), calcium propionate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), soy lecithin. Prepared with Liquid Margarine.

Egg:
USDA Grade A eggs, soy lecithin (release agent). Prepared with Liquid Margarine.

Pasteurized Process American Cheese:
Milk, water, milkfat, cheese culture, sodium citrate, salt, citric acid, sorbic acid (preservative), sodium phosphate, artificial color, lactic acid, acetic acid, enzymes, soy lecithin (added for slice separation).

Canadian Style Bacon:
Pork, water, sugar, salt, sodium lactate, sodium phosphate, natural flavor (vegetable), sodium diacetate and sodium nitrite (preservatives).

Liquid Margarine:
Liquid soybean oil, water, partially hydrogenated soybean oil, salt, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, soy lecithin, mono-and diglycerides, sodium benzoate and potassium sorbate (preservatives), artificial flavor, citric acid, vitamin A palmitate, beta carotene (color).

That, my friends, is the ingredients list for an Egg McMuffin with bacon. Impressive, isn’t it?

Personally, I lost count after about the 25th ingredient, and while some of them are innocent, such as, well, “water,” others certainly aren’t.

Sodium nitrite for example has a strong link to colon cancer. Margarines that were once thought to be healthy have now been exposed as heart attacks waiting to happen, far less healthy than regular butter, as unnatural compounds that don’t respond well to heating.

And of course there’s the six-ton elephant in the room: The use of genetically modified foods. They’re linked to sterility, of course weight gain, and even organ damage in lab animals.

The likely GMOs in this chemical cocktail masquerading as a breakfast include soybean oil, the various corn derived-products, and canola oil, all of which are banned in several countries or at least labeled, the GMO versions that is.

Ingesting such a food item has consequences that few are aware of, meaning that the overall calorie load only tells a small part of the story. The negative effects on overall health likely accrued can potentially wreck a person’s metabolism, not to mention add more toxins to their body that are likely to be stored in their abdominal areas as stubborn body fat in the worst possible place.

McDonald’s calorie counts aren’t enough for informed consumers

While McDonald’s still enjoys excellent sales in the U.S. and is trying to change for the better, the company has gone so far off the tracks that it will take many years to recover, if they’re committed to salvaging a little bit of their customers’ health in exchange for a portion of their never-ending profits.

It’s okay for customers to enjoy a meal that’s more about taste than it is about nutrition every once in a while, but the important thing is to enjoy such meals that at least include dignified ingredients.

McDonald’s must make the switch before it’s too late, because the health and GMO-free movements are about to explode in the United States and the fast food giant is the one that stands to lose the most.

Don’t be blinded by the hype over the McDonald’s calorie counts; look just beyond the surface to see what you’re really consuming and make the switch to a more natural diet for total body health and natural weight loss through gradual detoxification and metabolism support.
