Appearing on CBS This Morning, Dr. William Davis claims modern day wheat is bad for you. He is a cardiologist who has released a book about the wheat, the world’s most popular grain.

The wheat we eat today is not like our grandma’s wheat, according to Davis. In the 1960′s and 1970′s genetic researchers got their hands on wheat and created an 18-inch tall plant that yields 10x more than than the natural crop.

He explains:

There’s a new protein in this thing called gliadin. It’s not gluten. I’m not addressing people with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease. I’m talking about everybody else because everybody else is susceptible to the gliadin protein that is an opiate. This thing binds into the opiate receptors in your brain and in most people stimulates appetite, such that we consume 440 more calories per day, 365 days per year.

All hope is not lost because he says farmers could switch back to the old grain. The problem is that because of the loss in revenue, this move is not likely unless consumers take action. There is a movement, with many people turning away from wheat and as a result are shedding pounds of weight.

This is significant because of the broad scope of weight loss that is occurring:

If three people lost eight pounds, big deal. But we’re seeing hundreds of thousands of people losing 30, 80, 150 pounds. Diabetics become no longer diabetic; people with arthritis having dramatic relief. People losing leg swelling, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and on and on every day.

So what can we eat? Dr. Davis says to eat “real food” such as avocados, olives, olive oil, meats and vegetables. Avoid the foods that are manipulated by agribusiness and 90% of the grains the public consumes is wheat.

Despite the Mayo Clinic suggesting wheat in efforts for a balanced diet, Dr. Davis says that they are merely offering and alternative to the really bad stuff: white enriched products. It’s like telling people to smoke with filters. Until the grains are reversed to their natural form he suggests avoiding them completely. That’s when we will not only see improvements in health but a complete transformation.

This is the latest is a bombardment of findings that reveal centralized food distribution and genetic modification of our food has become a real problem for consumers looking to live a healthy lifestyle. The only effective alternatives are to buy local, grow your own food and eat food that has not been modified in the science labs.
