Arguably the most influential health expert in America, Dr. Mehmet Oz, has officially endorsed Proposition 37 in California, which makes the labeling of genetically modified foods (GMOs) mandatory in the state for many (but not all) food products. California is in the top ten of world economies for food crops, or would be if classified as a country, and the historic vote in November should be a precedent setter.
Labeling of GMOs is already required in over 60 countries, but a massive 36 million-dollar-plus campaign of deception has been waged against the California measure by big food and chemical companies in order to offset an initial groundswell of support for the measure.
In addition, a recent study demonstrating that rats fed GMO corn developed massive tumors has raised fears of the crops aound the world, including in Russia and France which banned GMO corn imports from the U.S.
The corn in the United States along with soy, canola, sugar beets and cotton is overwhelmingly genetically modified, but exports have been hurt in recent years due to these and other fears. The crops also easily cross contaminate with other non-GMO crops which further complicates the issue and has those concerned about real, honest food on a mission to stop the cultivation and spread of GMOs, or at least give folks the knowledge they need to avoid them if desired.
Dr. Oz GMO Labeling Endorsement Could Stem the Tide
Recent news reports showed that the huge campaign money investments against GMO labeling had been effective, changing what looked like a slam dunk into a worrisome proposition.
While the pro-labeling side has raised about 4 million on its own, they have been greatly outspent by the big corps feeding the “no” side on a daily basis.
The Dr. Oz endorsement is a key development for fans of food freedom, however, because he is seen as the one health expert whose opinion really matters to an emerging sector of people who are learning about the true principles and benefits of a strong natural-based health regiment, although he does endorse more modern methods of health and medicine also.
Dr. Oz gives endorsement on TV show
According to the press release, Dr. Oz concluded his show on Wednesday, Oct. 17 about the topic of GMOs with the following quote: “”Right now we have no way of knowing which foods have been genetically modified. I believe you should have that right,” said Dr. Oz, at the conclusion of the segment, titled GMO Foods: Are They Dangerous to Your Health? “I prefer to be cautious.”
Now that Dr. Oz is on board, the pendulum should swing back in the direction of common sense, and in favor of GMO labeling. Companies change labels all the time, so adding a small “May contain genetically modified ingredients” tag to their products shouldn’t be too taxing.
Thankfully, the truth is coming out about GMOs, and the revolution is underway. The people want their food sovereignty and their health back and Dr. Oz is on their side.
